The aquaculture projects within Region Three will be expanded, even as plans are in place for the establishment of a small seafood processing plant in that region.
This is according to Chairman of the New Guyana Marketing Corporation, Geoffrey Da Silva, who on Wednesday said that the processing plant is scheduled to be completed by mid-next year.
Speaking at the launching of Agriculture Month at the Parika packaging facility, Da Silva said that Region Three has the largest aquaculture farms in Guyana, with more than 40 ponds.
“The plan is to expand that further, and that is under discussion right now with the investors and some partners. So, in aquaculture, we hope to see additional projects in this region…We do have some that started out on a pilot basis in the Essequibo islands.”
At the launching of the month-long activities, Da Silva highlighted some of the investments that are taking place within Region Three.
Investors from the Caribbean and North America, he told the gathering, visited the Parika packaging facility even before it was officially commissioned, to examine the capacity of the plant.
Some seven years ago, the Chairman of GMC said, Guyana exported just under US$1M worth of non-traditional agricultural products, but today that figure has increased to over US$7M.
While this figure is relatively small, he noted, it is still a very significant growth, highlighting that there are market opportunities for local producers.
In showcasing the region, Da Silva said that the popular ‘Nicky’s Natural Fruit Juices’ sources all its fruits from a farm in that region.
He, however, noted that while there are a number of investments occurring in the region, much more needs to be done.
For this, he said, support will be given by the Guyana Marketing Corporation. Under the theme, ‘Growing More for Food Security,’ Agriculture Month was launched on Wednesday at the Parika packaging facility.
