The Abdulla Hamid Basketball Foundation’s (AHBF) Summer Programme for children was off to a flying start on Monday at the Mackenzie Sports Club (MSC) Basketball Court in the Mining Town of Linden.
Founder of AHBF, Hamid told Kaieteur Sport yesterday that the basketball aspect of the programme will fundamentally examine the various positions in the sport: point guard, shooting guard, forward and centre.
“We will be looking at the various positions in an effort to develop the young players’ all–round game. We don’t want people to develop in just one position. We want them grow totally,” Hamid explained.
The programme is in its 18th year and will teach the more than 60 children expected about the fundamentals of the game among other techniques, which include shooting, defence, rebounding and guard control.
“We want to teach them the right way. We have organised a complete package for the young basketball players,” he said, adding that apart from the game, the programme will have sessions on Peer Pressure and Crime Prevention.
According to the Kashif and Shanghai coach, he has invited Social Workers and Police Officers to conduct the social aspect of the event. The AHBF clinic is expected to conclude on August 31 at the same venue.
Some of the national players to emerge through the AHBF system include, Steve Neils Jr. and Marvin Hartman among a host of junior national players. Hamid can be contacted on 444 2571 for contributions to the programme. (Edison Jefford)
