Rivalry between Guyana and Suriname over the years has always been very exciting and keen and tonight’s crucial battle in the final game of group B play of the Digicel Caribbean Championship (DCC) will be no different.
At the back of the minds of the ‘Golden Jaguars’ would be the knock-out punch delivered by the Dutch speaking nation in the 2nd round of the FIFA World Cup home and away tie.
But the Jaguars who defeated the Surinamese 5-0 in the last Digicel Caribbean Championship (DCC – September 2006) will be aiming for another such performance not only to advance to the next round but will also be aiming to win for their fans and supporters.
Technical Director of the Guyana Football Federation Jamaal Shabazz recalls that when Guyana defeated Suriname in Curacao in 2006 they took 2 hours to leave the stadium and when the Surinamese returned the favor a few weeks ago, Guyana took 2 hours to leave the Providence Stadium, so the stage is now set for a gripping encounter.
“This is what makes the game beautiful, Suriname better don’t show up for the game.”
Tonight’s battle will be special in more ways than one. This might be the last time fans will get the opportunity to see a number of their trusted, tried and proven stalwarts on home soil in an international match.
The likes of Captain Charles ‘Lily’ Pollard, Collie ‘Hitman’ Hercules, Richard ‘Loddo’ Reynolds and Shawn Bishop will eventually give way for the new crop of players.
For Technical Director of the GFF Jamaal Shabazz it is the changing of the guards as far as football is concerned.
“People go to Buckingham Palace to see the guards change because it’s an historic thing and for us to see our old generation of players who’ve given their life for this country, I think anybody who refuses that opportunity to be in the stadium to see these guards change must question their nationality.”
DIGICEL DOES IT AGAIN
Shabazz was high in praise for Digicel who has helped Guyana to make history in a very special way.
“This stadium is the envy of the Caribbean, and to play under lights in the cricket stadium and football being the entity to do it, and again the opportunity to bring the people together to me is a huge statement.” Shabazz is of the view that it sets the stage for tonight’s game.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport earlier in the week, Suriname’s Head Coach Jaliens Kenneth had mentioned that they were more focused on their World cup qualification game against Haiti and will use the game against Guyana as an international warm up match.
But Suriname he said are still hoping to qualify for the DCC finals which will attract 6 teams including defending champions Haiti and host country Jamaica. The head coach has drafted in 3 new players in his squad for this tour.
Fans are encouraged to come out in support of the local team tonight and wear yellow or gold. All children under the age of 12 will be admitted free.
Meanwhile, the national under-17 and 20 teams will clash in the supporting game from 16:30hrs this afternoon.
