The Alpha United Football Club’s Carifesta Football tournament continues this evening with what is anticipated to be a pulsating ‘double header’ under flood lights at the Plaisance ground on the East Coast of Demerara.
The 16-team competition commenced last week in Linden and Alpha’s President Odinga Lumumba informed that $2.2 million in prize money is up for grabs in the competition which makes it one of the most lucrative local football tournaments.
Lumumba said that while the inaugural competition is being run to help in the promotion of Guyana’s hosting of Carifesta, which was first held in Guyana in 1972, the competition will be an annual one.
The winning team will collect $1 million while the losing finalist takes home $500,000. Top XX, Silver Shattas from Linden, Pouderoyen and Uitvlugt from West Demerara are among the teams which will challenge for the top spot.
East Coast side Buxton tackle West Berbice line-up Rosignol from 18:00hrs today in game one at Plaisance before BV battle Pouderoyen from 20:00hrs in the second game.
The action moves to the City on Tuesday and Wednesday with Santos playing Uitvlugt and GFC facing Campton at GFC on Tuesday, while Alpha meet Mocha and West Demerara take on Pele at the same venue the next day. (Sean Devers)
