The Caribbean Football Union (FCU) yesterday unveiled its new logo at the launching of the 2008 edition of the Digicel Caribbean Championship held at the Marriott Hotels & Resorts, Curacao.
In making the announcement, CFU President Austin Warner explained that the new logo comprises all the colors of all the flags of the teams in the Caribbean.
“Every single country’s flag, the color of their flag is included and is a logo as a wave showing that our members by and large are separated by water, by sea and therefore the waves that you see in the logo, represents this.”
Warner further explained that the new design was an attempt on their part to give the logo a more modern look but the big change was in the name of the Regional tournament from Digicel Caribbean Cup to Digicel Caribbean Championship.
He pointed out that this year’s Euro Championship was an impeccably well run event, relating to the quality of football, the refereeing and everything which gave the authorities a sense of joy and pride.
“We felt in the Caribbean that we too must try to emulate the European Championship and therefore we took the name from them, Championship.
But more importantly, this event is played in several countries, several groups and from each group a champion emerges and therefore in a real sense this event is one that involves all the qualifying champions from the various groups in the Caribbean.”
Digicel Group Head of Sponsorship, Keiran Foley, commenting on the name change said it is a mark of respect and when it was suggested by President Warner they immediately recognized the progression that Warner wanted to make.
“We are very honoured that a man of the stature of Mr. Warner would recognise the magnitude of this tournament to have it correctly reflected in its name.
Indeed I’m sure everybody here is aware that the last Digicel Cup as it was then called, we’ve moved from three teams that normally qualify for the CONCACAF Gold Cup to four teams being qualified.”
He suggested that this move is a reflection to the investment and state of Caribbean football, how positive and how huge it has progressed. Foley expressed gratitude to the CFU for what he termed a great partnership.
