Guyana’s national football team, the ‘Golden Jaguars’, will engage Trinidad and Tobago in a friendly international match at the Marvin Lee Stadium from 7:30pm tonight.
The two teams had played prior to Guyana’s World Cup campaign, from which they bowed out at the second round to Suriname, and the Twin Island Republic had won.
T&T still have hopes of qualifying for the 2010 World Cup and are continuing their preparation, while Guyana will set their sights on the Digicel Cup, which serves as qualification for the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
Guyana will host Group B of the Digicel Cup from August 4-11, while the tournament will be launched this month in Curacao where Group A will kick things off from July 25 to August 1.
Organising Secretary of the Guyana Football Federation, Aubrey ‘Shanghai’ Major disclosed that following previous talks between him and Technical Director Jamaal Shabazz, the latter had continued with efforts to have the Guyana team play practice games ahead of the Digicel engagement.
Those efforts were aided by FIFA and regional senior football official Austin Jack Warner, who made it possible for the match. Warner was instrumental in the Guyana team gathering in Trinidad for the initial start of their preparations.
They are currently being housed at the Crown’s Plaza Hotel, while it was arranged for the Guyana-based players to travel last evening for the match.
Other practice games have been scheduled for the Jaguars who will hope to repeat and improve on their performance in last year’s Digicel Cup tournament where they came to prominence in regional football with several impressive wins.
