DEAR EDITOR
I usually agree with Mr. Justin DeFreitas on many matters, such as the point he made concerning Obama in a letter to Kaieteur News, dated 2008/06/ 28, “What’s good for the Goose is good for the Gander.”
Or what I believe he was insinuating in the said letter, that the Muslims are generally silent on matters of major significance, such as the Palestinian issue, but are vociferous on matters which are of little or no significance to the Muslims generally.
And then he pounces on the Muslim women, the favourite punching bag for non-Muslims. I wonder why they are so intent on ‘liberating’ the Muslim women, despite the fact that their womenfolk are the epitome of immorality! Sir, charity begins at home, save your women first, then worry about the Muslim women.
The time spent reading the thrash you quoted would’ve been better spent if you had read from the direct source itself, the Quran. You ought to be intelligent enough to know that, with any given topic/issue, there are opposing views. The role of the woman in Islam is no different.
What is negatively said in ignorance of the Muslim woman can also be said of the traditional Christian or Hindu woman. So, to get the true picture and to be able to form an intelligent and independent opinion, one must at least check with the direct source and substantiate their position from there.
If you decide to read the Quran, the only hurdle you will face is contained in Ch. 2: 2, 23¬24. If you can deal with that and triumph, the Muslims will give you the blind reverence which they now give to the Quran, and will even let their women walk in their birthday suits if you say so!
But, for now, because I am sure you will not read the Quran, either because you are too lazy or you believe that you have all the answers, or whatever, I invite you to attend one of the public lectures of one Mr. Khalid Yassin, a prominent Muslim intellectual currently visiting Guyana, and pose your questions to him.
He is quite capable of effectively and permanently dealing with your concern for the Muslim women!
I trust that you will honour this invitation (feel free to bring along a friend or a dozen) and cease hiding in the newspapers. Sheik Mustapha
