Beyond the noise
Dear Editor,
Whenever a regional ferry suffers an engine failure or a close call at sea, a predictable public spectacle follows. Town hall meetings grow heated, headlines splash warnings across local front pages, and political officials issue urgent press statements. For a few weeks, public discourse is dominated by the issue.
Yet when the media attention dies down, a dangerous misconception often lingers: that raising a loud alarm is the same as solving the problem.
In maritime transit, demanding safety is far more than making noise—it requires the quiet, unglamorous, and expensive work of structural accountability.
