(Kaieteur News) – The United States Export Import (US EXIM) Bank has signaled its interest in another key infrastructure development to Guyana, the deep-water port, expected to be constructed in Berbice.
During a meeting with President Irfaan Ali and other Cabinet members at State House, Chairman of the US EXIM Bank, John Jovanovic said a letter of interest was issued to the leader.
This was disclosed by one of the members of the visiting delegation of the bank during a video statement shared by President Ali.
According to the official, “One of the highlights from the lunch was our chairman issuing a letter of interest for the deep-water ports and so this is yet another project in which we can support the infrastructure requirements of the Guyanese people.”
The US EXIM Bank has provided the Government of Guyana (GoG) with a US$527 million loan to finance the Wales Gas-to-Energy (GTE) project.
In a statement, the US Embassy noted that the leaders discussed exciting opportunities ahead. “EXIM stands ready to finance additional development projects that align with Guyana’s national priorities, bringing the same transparency, competitive terms, and reliability that characterise U.S. partnership,” the embassy explained.
In April last year, President Ali announced that an additional 1,000 jobs will be created in East Berbice-Corentyne as the government prepares to turn the sod for the US$285 million Berbice Port project.
At the time, he said that local shipping competitors, Muneshwers Limited and John Fernandes Limited, will be investing in the project.
“They want to turn the sod in the coming weeks. [It] will be an investment of US$285 million [and] will create 1,000 jobs,” the president said. According to the president, the Berbice Port complements the development of a deep-water port in the region. He noted that the government is working with international company Bechtel to finalise plans for the deep-water port. Bechtel has a significant presence in the development and management of deep-water ports. They have experience in designing, permitting, and managing the construction of such ports, as well as overseeing operations. Bechtel has been involved in numerous deep-water port projects globally, including ones in Saudi Arabia, the United States, Australia, and the United Arab Emirates.
President Ali informed his audience that this deep-water port aims to facilitate the development of Guyana’s second gas project. “That port will open up tremendous opportunities for transport, logistics, accommodation, real estate, [and] construction,” he further revealed.
A modern, high-span four-lane bridge will also be constructed across the Berbice River, and when completed, commuters will no longer be required to pay a toll fee.
