Kaieteur News – Dem boys seh, these days, people applying for jobs does bring more papers than a whole printing press could ever manage. You go open they CV, and you wonder if you reading a résumé or a library catalogue. Some of dem people have more letters after their names than in their actual name!

And nah talk about university certificates—dem papers is like diplomas, certificates, awards, commendations, memberships, and things with acronyms that could choke your dictionary. You open one line, it full; open two line, still nah finish. You start to think, “Is this a person or a mobile filing cabinet?”

But yuh see, as an employer, you have to behave careful. Because not everything with shiny letters and embossed seals is real. Some of dem boys and girls who applying—dem papers come from home printers, with ink running like rainwater and fonts so fancy you wonder if a calligrapher did it in the middle of the night.

Some of these so-called “certificates” nah even make sense. You check one, it say “Advanced Senior Expert of Excellence in Human Resource Development, Level 7, Module 23-B.” You scratch yuh head and seh, “Level 7, module 23-B? What country is that?”

And this is why when dem boys hiring, it does take time. Short list them first, because if you tek everybody at face value, yuh office soon turn into a museum of fake paper. Then when you decide who to employ, ask for all them certificates. And when dem get dem certificates, spend months checking if dem real or if dem one of those printer-made miracles that anybody can do at home with a printer and ink. Some real certificates, some fake—but dem boys seh, better to spend three months than to hire one paper warrior and find out he can’t even turn on a computer.

Truth is, not all that glitters when it comes to qualifications is gold. Plenty people shining on paper but nah have a lick of practical sense. Some of dem write “expert” like dem own the universe, but ask them to write a letter and dem look like you ask dem to speak Spanish.

So, dem boys seh, always tek yuh time, check dem papers, and never get blinded by letters after names. Because one fake certificate can cost a company more than three real employees.

So next time yuh looking at somebody CV and wonder how one person manage to collect more papers than the government printing office, remember—sometimes, it’s not what yuh see on paper, it’s what yuh can do with all dem qualifications. And some qualified persons cannot spell and can’t write fuh save dem life!.
