(Kaieteur News) – There is a creature called government noise nuisance. A government monster. Not VP Jagdeo at full blast. Nor Excellency Ali furiously boiling over. Follow the vibrations.

Guyanese thinking that those times drawn from memory are airline departure schedules have it wrong. They represent the grueling hours of GPL-induced blackouts. A rolling load shedding schedule. PPP Govt sponsored noise abuses, noise nuisances, noise terrors. In fairness, the government did warn that blackouts will now blanket Guyana, inflict blizzard conditions on coasts and elsewhere. There’s a silver lining. A big man in the PPP Govt rushed out from his airconditioned office (or airconditioned spa) to reassure Guyanese that blackouts will be banished during the Christmas Season. The astronauts in charge of light in Guyana cannot provide a ‘li’l’ light today, but they can commit to a full supply three months hence. From Turkey to Qatar, from America (Lindsayca) to Guyana, it looks like it’s going to be a Jolly, Merry, Christmas. I knew the Qatar trip had its hidden gems, its payoffs. The question is to whom? Since I believe in ministerial proclamations, I push the envelope: how about a little snow alongside the flow of current? Fairy lights and snowflakes galore. Who needs America in December?
While anticipating Christmas with barely concealed enthusiasm (and another cash grant [thanks to what the Persians did to oil prices]), I’m bracing for the next series of extended blackouts and the blasts of noise nuisances. Ever been in the company of not one, not two, not three, but more industrial sized generators all carrying on with their business at full throttle? Well, I have. Trust me, it’s a symphony; a crescendo of rumbling, ricocheting thunder. No white noise, this kind. Makes me long, every now and then, for some of those real, rubdown, shove down, throwdown Jamaican dance hall gyrations at vibrating, pulsating volumes. More later, than now.
I hope that GPL electricity dependents get my drift. It’s a two-fisted attack. One fist folded around a steel ball is the punch to the head: blackout and no light, no fan, no air conditioner. By grace, I bought myself some indulgences. The second fist to the face is when the generators from government buildings start growling like sand trucks on some special type of diesel, and the poor dogs start howling. In one fell swoop, the government (thanks to the clever visions and kind considerations of the GPL) batters Guyanese with extended darkness, chronic noise nuisances, cruelty to animals, distress to students, and torments to workers. The PPP Govt must be complimented for finding new ways to pile more pressure on already struggling Guyanese. And this is the PPP Govt that says it cares.
A thought sneaked in sideways. What happens if I have a generator that had to be on frequently to combat GPL (govt-sponsored) blackouts? Would government officials gleefully call the Guyana Police Force SWAT team and the EPA on me? I have a solution. Apply to the Guyana Development Bank for a loan for a generator, then turn it on to test the waters. I can be ruction, occasionally. But there’s more to that move. Testing the reception to my loan application (with KN or Demerara Waves article in hand). Gauge how the government reacts to my new generator and its noise output. When there must be coexistence with a government like the PPP of Ali and Jagdeo, then one expects anything.
The issue that I now put before all Guyanese is simple: who’s the biggest source of the loudest and continuous instances of noise nuisance in Guyana? The choices are straightforward: bars that bruise the senses; or government that batters into a coma. I’ll take Simon and Garfunkel (Sounds of Silence) than Drs. Ali and Jagdeo in a month of Sundays.
