GPF recorded 124 reports of domestic, family violence against girls under 18 for 2020-2025 — Home Affairs Minister
(Kaieteur News) – The Guyana Police Force (GPF) recorded 124 reports of domestic and family violence involving girls under the age of 18 between 2020 and 2025.
The figure was confirmed by Minister of Home Affairs Oneidge Walrond at the last sitting of the National Assembly, in a written response to a question from Opposition Member of Parliament and Leader of the Forward Guyana Movement (FGM), Amanza Walton.

Walton had asked the minister to state “how many reports of domestic violence involved girls under the age of 18, disaggregated by region, during the period of 2020-2025.”
In her response, Minister Walrond said, “The Guyana Police Force records reports of domestic and family violence in its occurrence books, station diaries, investigative files, domestic violence registers and related case management systems.”
Regional Breakdown
Region Four — combining policing divisions 4A, 4B and 4C — recorded the highest number of cases for the period, with a total of 42. Across the full five-year span, 2025 saw the most reports filed in a single year, with 28 cases. Region Eight recorded the fewest cases, with three, while Region Seven recorded six and Region Nine recorded seven.
An August 6 report by this publication, found that 532 girls under 18 were placed in emergency care between 2020 and 2025 after experiencing abuse, according to Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Vindhya Persaud. Those figures were also disclosed in a written response to a National Assembly question from Walton, who had asked how many emergency safe housing placements were provided to girls under 18 fleeing domestic violence during the period.
Minister Persaud said the Childcare and Protection Agency (CPA) reported that 532 girls were placed into care due to abuse over the five years, and explained that the children were accommodated through state-run care facilities, privately operated homes and foster care arrangements.
Walton also asked how many social workers are assigned nationwide to handle adolescent protection matters. Minister Persaud reported 63 child protection officers deployed across the country, broken down as follows:
- Region One: 2 officers
- Region Two: 5 officers
- Region Three: 4 officers
- Region Four: 23 officers — the largest complement, spread across four locations: 7 on the East Coast Demerara, 5 on the East Bank Demerara, 5 in North Georgetown and 6 in South Georgetown
- Region Five: 5 officers
- Region Six: 12 officers — 6 in New Amsterdam, 3 in Whim and 3 in Corriverton
- Region Seven: 1 officer
- Region Eight: 3 officers
- Region Nine: 3 officers
- Region Ten: 5 officers, based at the regional office
