King Charles shocked at “appallingly tragic loss of life” in MV Barima disaster
(Kaieteur News) – Britain’s King Charles III has expressed profound sorrow over the devastating loss of life resulting from the capsizing of the MV Barima, extending heartfelt condolences to President Irfaan Ali, the people of Guyana and the families grieving loved ones.
In a personal message signed “Charles R,” the King said he and Queen Camilla were “most profoundly shocked and saddened” to learn of the maritime disaster, which has become one of the deadliest tragedies in Guyana’s history.
The old MV Barima which capsized on Saturday night.
Recalling his visit to Guyana, King Charles said he retained “the fondest memories” of the country and was therefore writing with “particular sorrow” to convey the couple’s “deepest possible sympathy and heartfelt condolences” to the nation.
“My wife and I were most profoundly shocked and saddened to learn of the appallingly tragic loss of life following the capsizing of the M.V. Barima,” the monarch wrote.
He added that his thoughts were especially with the families who have lost loved ones in the tragedy.
The King also paid tribute to the emergency personnel, members of the search and rescue teams, and volunteers who have continued recovery efforts under extremely difficult conditions.
“We also pay special tribute to the courage and dedication of the search and rescue teams who continue their efforts under such difficult circumstances,” the message stated.
Concluding the letter, King Charles assured Guyanese that they remain in the thoughts and prayers of both himself and Queen Camilla.
“The people of Guyana remain very much in our hearts and our prayers at this time of deep anguish and loss.”
The royal message adds to the growing list of international expressions of sympathy received by Guyana since the MV Barima disaster, with regional governments, CARICOM and other international partners also offering condolences and solidarity as the nation continues to mourn.
