(Kaieteur News) – Police were called in on Sunday afternoon after a farmer caught three men in a diplomatic-registered vehicle allegedly stealing produce from his farm and a neighbouring property along the West Bank Demerara (WBD).
According to one of the victims, he discovered the men on his farm around 16:11hrs while checking on his produce.
He said tangerines and oranges were also stolen from his neighbour’s farm, prompting him to alert police after he and other residents blocked the road to prevent the suspects from leaving.
“I called the police at 11 minutes after 4, and they arrived after 5,” the farmer said.
A video seen by this publication shows police intercepting the vehicle and detaining the occupants.
Reports indicate the suspects told police that their “Caucasian bosses” had permission to remove produce from the farms.
However, the farm owners have disputed this claim, alleging that the diplomatic-registered vehicle may have been used as a cover for theft.
They said the vehicle had been seen repeatedly in the area around the time tangerines, oranges, and avocados went missing.
However, they previously dismissed it as suspicious due to its diplomatic plates, assuming it belonged to foreign officials touring the area. They said they only alerted police after catching the men allegedly stealing avocados in the act.
