Edinburgh home flattened by early morning fire
(Kaieteur News) – Zalema Ally, a 55-year-old housewife of Lot 1, Edinburgh Village, East Bank Berbice, was fortunate enough to escape unharmed from an early morning fire which quickly demolished her home on Monday.
Thick plumes of smoke emanated from the concrete and wooden building just about 7:00am, sending persons scampering for water. However, despite their best efforts, the fire developed rapidly.

From a hammock in the nearby yard, a distraught Ally explained to Kaieteur News that she and her husband occupied the upper four-bedroom flat, while a female tenant dwelled in the lower one-bedroom space. Ally said the fire originated from the lower flat. At the time of the incident, the tenant was not at home.
“To be honest, I didn’t know that she wasn’t at home. Last night I suspected that she’s not at home. She’s a person who you does normally hear if somebody deh home or not. I don’t know what really transpired downstairs.”

Ally said there were no electrical issues in her apartment, neither was any stove left on or unattended. She said she was asleep when she was awakened by an explosion.
“I does turn off my gas and everything. I was in my sleep. I wake up earlier and I go back to sleep. And in my sleep, I hear like a bomb, and I push the window, if yuh see smoke. I thought was the car. I rush to the front door.”
With the fire coursing upward, Ally recounted that she was in fear of dying. She managed to escape downstairs and to safety just moments before the fire completely destroyed the property.
“If you see this thing. The fire was massive.”
What prompted the fire is not yet confirmed. She resided at that property for nearly 12 years. Ally noted that due to the heat and the massive flames, no one could have saved any material item, resulting in her losing everything she owned.
One relative told this publication that an in-law from a house behind called her and told her that the house was on fire, and calls were made right away to the New Amsterdam Fire Station.
Officials from the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) came in for high praises from relatives for their prompt response.
When contacted on Monday, divisional fire officer Clive McDonald said the fire was still under investigation.
