(Kaieteur News) – The office of the leader of the opposition has accused the government of deliberately stonewalling the work of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), noting that a fifth attempt to convene the body failed on Monday because government members once again failed to show up.
The opposition said the repeated delays are preventing scrutiny of billions of dollars in public spending.
According to a release Monday, PAC Chairman, Vishnu Panday was still awaiting a response from government members on whether they would attend the scheduled sitting. The office said four previous attempts to hold meetings had already collapsed because government representatives were unavailable.
The opposition said the continued delays are preventing one of parliament’s most important oversight committees from carrying out its constitutional responsibility of examining the Auditor General’s reports and ensuring that public funds are being spent lawfully and in keeping with parliament’s approval.
The latest setback comes after the PAC itself took nine months to be reconstituted. Now, despite finally being established, the committee remains unable to begin its work.
According to the Opposition Leader’s office, the committee has only completed its examination of Auditor General’s reports up to 2018, leaving reports covering the period 2019 to 2024 still awaiting parliamentary review. It warned that every missed meeting pushes back scrutiny of billions of dollars in public expenditure.
“The Guyanese people deserve an explanation as to why the government continues to frustrate the work of the very committee constitutionally mandated to scrutinise public spending,” the office said.
It has called on government members serving on PAC to fulfill their constitutional responsibilities and facilitate the immediate resumption of the committee’s work. It said meaningful transparency and accountability cannot exist if parliamentary oversight is repeatedly brought to a standstill.
