Women diplomats in spotlight as Guyana pushes UN Secretary-General bid
(Kaieteur News) – Guyana used this year’s observance of the International Day of Women in Diplomacy to spotlight the critical role of women in global leadership while promoting the country’s bid to secure the United Nations’ top office.
Diplomats, government officials, development partners and other stakeholders gathered on June 24, under the theme “Women in Diplomacy: Culture, Soft Power and Inclusive Leadership” to celebrate the contributions of women to diplomacy and explored how culture and storytelling could strengthen international cooperation.

The event, jointly organised by the United Nations in Guyana, the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and TEDx Turkeyen, also served as a platform to highlight Guyana’s nomination of Ambassador Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett for the post of United Nations Secretary-General.
Organisers said Rodrigues-Birkett’s candidacy reflects Guyana’s longstanding commitment to multilateral diplomacy while underscoring the growing leadership of Caribbean women on the global stage.
Delivering opening remarks were United Nations Resident Coordinator Jean Kamau, Chinese Ambassador Yang Yang and Ambassador Donnette Streete, Director of the Frontiers Unit within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
The speakers stressed the importance of ensuring women’s full, equal and meaningful participation in diplomacy and decision-making, describing diplomacy as an essential tool for building trust, advancing shared interests and responding to increasingly complex global challenges.
One of the highlights of the programme was a series of TED-style storytelling presentations by female representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Chinese Embassy and the Canadian High Commission. Wearing traditional and culturally significant attire, the diplomats shared the history, symbolism and values reflected in their clothing while illustrating how culture can be used as a form of soft power to strengthen ties between nations.
Through its partnership with TEDx Turkeyen, participants also received coaching in storytelling and public speaking, helping to strengthen communication skills that can be applied in diplomatic and public engagements.
The event concluded with a renewed commitment by the United Nations in Guyana to continue working with the Government of Guyana and its development partners to advance gender equality, promote inclusive leadership and expand women’s participation in decision-making at all levels.
Among those attending were representatives of the embassies of Argentina, Chile, the United Kingdom, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Canada, along with officials from CARICOM, the Inter-American Development Bank, the World Bank, United Nations agencies, the University of Guyana’s Institute of Gender Studies and International Relations, and young women from The Imperial House.
