Man who confessed to killing wife at Uitvlugt takes own life

Kaieteur News- The man who confessed to killing his wife during argument at De-Groot Enkline, Uitvlugt, West Coast Demerara has taken his own life.

Police told Kaieteur News that Hemat Kumar Mohamed was found dead in his cell on Friday at the Leonora police lock-ups. Mohamed was arrested on Thursday June 25 after the remains of his wife, 46-year-old Shavanie Hanoman was found floating in a canal a short distance away from their home.

He later confessed to stabbing his wife and pushing her into the canal during an argument on the day (Wednesday) she was last seen alive.

Police said that on the day they arrested Mohamed he was taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital for treatment around 18:00hrs. He was discharged around 23:40hrs and taken back to his cell at the Leonora Police Station.

At around 11:24hrs. the following day, his son brought meals for him. A rank received the meal and took it to Mohamed’s cell and called out for him but got no response.

He then opened the cell and entered and found Mohamed dead. He had reportedly taken his own life with a piece of clothing he was wearing.
