Rupununi farmer fined $65,000 for multiple Traffic Offences
(Kaieteur News) – A 26-year-old farmer from Potarinau Village in the Central Rupununi has been handed a total fine of $65,000 after pleading guilty to a string of traffic violations before the Lethem Magistrates’ Court.
Abel Mandook appeared on Thursday before Magistrate Omadatt Chandan, where he admitted to four separate offences committed the previous day on the St. Ignatius Public Road, Central Rupununi, while operating motorcycle CR 548.

Mandook’s guilty pleas covered the following offences:
- Driving without a licence — fined $25,000- or two-weeks’ imprisonment in default
- Breach of Insurance — fined $25,000- or two-weeks’ imprisonment in default
- Carrying a pillion rider without a safety helmet — fined $5,000- or one-week’s imprisonment in default
- Operating an unlicensed motor vehicle — fined $10,000- or one-week’s imprisonment in default
Should Mandook fail to pay the combined $65,000 in fines, he faces a total of six weeks behind bars.
The case serves as a timely reminder to motorists — particularly in hinterland communities where traffic enforcement may be less frequent — that the laws governing licensing, insurance, and road safety apply equally across all regions of Guyana. Riding without a valid licence or insurance not only carries legal consequences but puts both the rider and others on the road at serious risk.
The offences were committed on Wednesday, 24th June, 2026.
