Some Guyanese can’t afford to come back home

(Kaieteur News) – Guyana celebrating 60 years of Independence and America preparing fuh celebrate 250 years. So right now, Guyanese in Uncle Sam waving two flags at de same time like dem confused at a cricket match and accidentally support both teams.

Dem boys seh in Guyana people decorating roads, planning concerts, and talking patriotic till yuh frighten. Every man suddenly become historian. One fella who can’t even remember he wife birthday now explaining de constitutional history of 1966 with tears in he eye.

Meanwhile in America, Guyanese preparing fuh big barbecue, cook-up, seven curry and enough reggae-chutney-soca fusion music fuh wake up George Washington heself.

But all de joy get one lil crack in it now because America immigration rules decide fuh add more drama to de situation.

Now some people applying fuh Green Card hearing that dem will have to return home and wait till de paperwork process complete. And suddenly “back home” sounding like a horror movie.

One lady seh she can’t come back because she children deh in New York and she husband finally learn how fuh separate white from coloured clothes in de washing machine. She seh if she leave him alone too long, de marriage gon collapse before de immigration process done.

Another man seh he nah coming back because he spend twenty years building up heself in America and if he return to Guyana now, people gon start asking he fuh “one small assistance” before he even clear Immigration.

And then dem boys hear about some people who really cannot return. Not because of snow or taxes or children. No sah. Court summons waiting fuh dem here. Some of dem gat outstanding child support wah higher than de national debt.

Some of dem know that if dem come back dem gan gat to go in front of judge and by the time de cases finish, dem gan reach retirement age. One man had nuff girlfriends in Guyana and he leff without telling them. He know that if he return, dem gan come looking fuh explanation.

Dem boys seh some overseas Guyanese now praying harder than when dem did applying fuh visa in de first place. Every immigration lawyer suddenly more popular.

So, while Guyana celebrating Independence and America celebrating freedom, some Guyanese caught in de middle like goat tied between two mango trees.
