‘Deportee’ jailed 18 years for Corentyne rum shop murder
(Kaieteur News) – Andrew Seegobin, a construction worker of John’s Village, Port Mourant, Corentyne, was on Friday sentenced to 18 years in jail for the 2023 killing of his friend at a rum shop in the village.
The trial commenced on March 9, 2026. On March 16 last, a 12-member jury returned a unanimous guilty verdict at the Berbice High Court after a two-hour long deliberation.
Seegobin, also known as ‘Deportee’, 32, was accused of the murder of 29-year-old Ramanand Mingo at John’s, Port Mourant, Corentyne, Berbice on November 19, 2023 while they were at a bar. On that evening, a physical confrontation ensued between Mingo, his brother and Seegobin. Mingo reportedly suffered a stab wound inflicted by Seegobin and was rushed to the Port Mourant Hospital where he died.

He pleaded not guilty at the start of the trial.
Defense Attorney Surihya Sabsook had told the court during the trial that Seegobin acted in self-defense as he was targeted by the brothers. In his account, Seegobin stated that the now deceased Mingo had attacked him with a knife, which was deflected and accidentally caused Mingo to be fatally wounded.
The prosecution was led by prosecutor Marisa Edwards, who led testimonies from 15 witnesses, including the mother of the deceased and a pathologist.
Following the sentencing, Mingo’s mother Lilowtie Ramsammy, who sobbed throughout portions of the hearing, said her family was relieved for what she said was long awaited justice, but also emphasised that nothing can return her son to her.
“I feel very very hurt for my son. We have justice, but I’m not satisfied yet…. Ramanand Mingo ah meh baby. It really hurt meh fuh meh son,” she had expressed.
She told the court that her son and Seegobin were close friends, and that she was unaware of any conflict between the two.
Dianand Mingo, brother of the deceased, told Kaieteur News that he “feels very good” that justice has been served for his brother.
The prosecutor had relied on the testimony of government pathologist, Dr. Vivekanand Bridgemohan to dispel claims that the wound was accidentally inflicted.
During the sentencing hearing, Justice Kumar cited several mitigating factors. She highlighted that Seegobin had no prior conviction, and the fact that he expressed remorse and apologized to the family. She also noted that he is a suitable candidate for rehabilitation, with the capacity to be reintegrated into society through lawful and acceptable means.
Weighing in on the aggravating factors, she pointed out the nature and circumstances of the crime. The fact that the deceased was unarmed at the time of the incident in which he was stabbed to the chest was emphasised too. Justice Kumar also noted the weapon used to commit the crime.
Seegobin was sentenced to 18 years, from which deductions will be made for time spent in remand; he was remanded to prison in 2023.
Outside the court following the sentencing, Seegobin’s relatives maintained his innocence, insisting that he did not kill Mingo, and signaled their intention to appeal the ruling.
