(Kaieteur News) – Dem boys seh deh new four-lane Aubrey Barker Public Road done claim it first life, and everybody now walking around shaking dem head and saying, “What a tragedy.” And it is a tragedy. One life lost is one too many. But dem boys seh sometimes tragedy does come wid warning sign bigger than a billboard and still nobody ain’t paying attention.
Because in Guyana, we building four-lane roads like if we is Dubai, but operating dem like if it is Bourda Market on Christmas Eve.
Dem boys seh a proper four-lane road supposed to move traffic smooth and fast. But in Guyana, deh outer lane does turn into parking lot, vending arcade, minibus terminal, mechanic shop and sometimes barbecue stand all at one time. One side got man selling plantain chips, deh next side got somebody parking a truck “just fuh two minutes,” and before yuh know it, deh four-lane road narrow down to two lanes and a prayer.
Then yuh got deh crossing problem. Whoever planning these roads seem to believe people in Guyana does teleport from one side to deh next. But people living all along these roadways. Granny got to cross fuh buy bread. Schoolchildren got to cross fuh catch transport. A man got to cross because he remember he left he phone charger home. Yet authorities designing these roads like human beings is optional accessories.
Dem boys seh some of these planners does sit in air-condition office studying foreign blueprint while never once standing by deh roadside to see how Guyanese actually behave. They drawing straight lines pon paper while drivers zig-zagging in real life like cockroach when kitchen light switch on.
And discipline? Leh we na even start. In other countries, outer lanes clear. Here, authorities see illegal parking, roadside vending and minibuses stopping every six feet and does behave like dem studying deh situation fuh a PhD thesis before acting.
Dem boys seh government should stop this obsession wid building four-lane roads through populated areas and instead focus pon proper two-lane bypass roads outside communities. Build roads where traffic can flow without turning pedestrians into contestants on a game show called “Run Across If Yuh Brave.”
Because right now, some of these fancy roads looking less like transportation planning and more like expensive confusion wid lane markings.
Talk half. Leff half.
