Dem Boys Seh…
(Kaieteur News) – Dem boys notice whenever people driving and see an accident, especially a bad one, the first thing that does come out is not “Oh my!,” not “I hope everybody all right,” but a barrage of four-letter words or what we does call “curse words” or foul language.
Recently, when a fatal accident occurred on the East Bank Public Road, somebody passing in a vehicle started videoing the scene. But before the camera could properly focus, the mouth had already gone into overdrive.
Dem boys seh this is Guyana. We have enough problems already. We got potholes, traffic jams, reckless drivers, political arguments, crime, high prices and people who does drive like dem believe the road belong to dem father. Why we adding a soundtrack of expletives to the national crisis? ‘And some people cussing so naturally that if yuh ask dem what time it is, dem could probably answer you with three curse words and a direction.’
The problem is that children listening. Parents does tell children, “Watch yuh mouth!” But children watching everything else too. They watching parents. They listening to how adults speak when the traffic light refusing to change, when somebody cuts in front of the car, when the Wi-Fi slow, when the neighbour dog barking and when the electricity bill arrive. Then we wonder where the children learn it.
Change has to start in the home. Parents have to set a better example. And adults have to learn that they don’t have to remain in the company of people who use expletives as punctuation marks. If every sentence somebody speaks needs a curse word to hold it together, dem boys seh that sentence probably need an editor.
Is only then we can pass on a good example to we parents. It remind dem boys of de story of Little Johnny. His Johnny’s parents were worried because the boy had developed a very colourful vocabulary. His father consulted a psychiatrist, who suggested a simple Christmas experiment.
“Ask Johnny what he wants for Christmas,” the psychiatrist said. “Every time he uses a bad word, substitute what he wants with a pile of dog manure.”
Christmas Eve came. Daddy asked, “Johnny, what would you like for Christmas?”
Johnny gave a long and very enthusiastic list of toys—using language that would make the Christmas tree hide its ornaments.
Christmas morning came. Johnny looked under the tree, in his room and in the garage. Everywhere he found the same gift: dog manure.
His father asked, “So, Johnny, what did you get for Christmas?”
Johnny looked around and said, “I think I got a puppy—but I can’t seem to find it!”
