(Kaieteur News) – Leader of the Assembly for Liberty and Prosperity (ALP) party Simona Broomes has called attention to the “inhumane” treatment of some workers in the country, detailing her experience recently with two female police officers in Linden who just after covering a 24-hour shift had to start another.
In a Facebook video post, Broomes shared how the two officers, wearing brown and black uniforms, stopped her van without knowing it was her to ask for money to buy food and water. They were pleasantly surprised, and possibly quite relieved when they realised it was her, she noted.
The officers explained that they were short of staff and had just completed a 24-hour shift but no one came to relieve them, so that they had to pick up another 12-hour shift having no food and water. Broomes was concerned that the women had no choice but to stop a random vehicle to ask for help.
“It’s inhumane. I was to speak to the police, government, private sector and everybody. You cannot use people to work like that. If people are working through their lunch break, they should be paid for it. Workers out there are going through so many things, yet we normalise these things,” she expressed. “These are police officers…nothing to eat. How can you be so cruel? It’s horrible, it’s cruel, it’s inhumane. These days, there is no respect for workers. These are men and women in uniform. You have to treat them better.”
Apart from providing the women the money they needed on the spot, Broomes shared that she also took food for them later in the day as they covered the second shift.
