(Kaieteur News) – A $62.5 million police station was commissioned at Ekereku Village, Region Seven on Tuesday, which, according to Minister of Home Affairs, Oneidge Walrond, will significantly strengthen law enforcement capacity in the area.
The Ministry of Home Affairs said the project forms part of an aggressive, results-driven $2 billion security expansion across Region Seven, reconstructing stations at Imbaimadai, Kamarang, and Kurupung, establishing a new Divisional Headquarters, and expanding marine assets in Bartica.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Minister Walrond said, “This is what it means to govern with purpose. We are not waiting for development to trickle into our hinterland; we are driving it there. We are ensuring that no Guyanese community is invisible, ignored, or left to fend for itself.”

Minister of Home Affairs, Oneidge Walrond and Permanent Secretary, Andre Ally along with members of the Guyana Police Force and Guyana Defence Force at the commissioning of the new police station.
She made it clear that these interventions are not symbolic, they represent a fundamental shift in governance philosophy.
“For too long, development followed a narrow path. That era is over. We are building a Guyana where the reach of the State is felt equally, from the coast to the hinterland, from the capital to the most remote communities. This is deliberate, this is strategic, and this is leadership in action,” she stated.
She noted that serious crime has declined by 30 percent between January and April 2026, with a 157.1 percent clear-up rate in the region. “Evidence that sustained investment, modern policing, and firm leadership are delivering results,” she added.
The minister reaffirmed that the government will continue to act decisively to protect citizens and expand opportunity nationwide.
“This station is not an act of charity; it is an act of justice. It reflects a government that understands its duty and has the political will to act. And we will continue to deliver, because the people of Guyana deserve nothing less,” she delivered.
Further, the ministry reported that the government remains resolute in advancing its national security transformation, strengthening institutions, and delivering on its promise of One Guyana.
