GPL waives $1.6M capital contribution for electricity to Yarrowkabra youth facility
(Kaieteur News) – The Guyana Power and Light (GWI) on Tuesday announced that it has waived $1.6 million capital contribution for the electricity connection to a new facility being constructed by the Youth for Hope Not-for-Profit Foundation in Yarrowkabra.
According to a release by GPL, the move reaffirms the company’s commitment to supporting community development and youth empowerment countrywide.
It said the waiver also represents a significant investment in a project that will provide expanded opportunities for young people through mental health programmes, education, mentorship and skills development.

Further, GPL said its decision to waive the capital contribution reflects the company’s ongoing commitment to supporting initiatives that promote sustainable community development and improve the quality of life for all Guyanese.
“The Youth for Hope Not-for-Profit Foundation, founded by Amar Ram, has been at the forefront of initiatives aimed at empowering young people and fostering positive community engagement in prisons, notably the Lusignan and Timehri prisons,” the agency noted.
Founder of the Youth for Hope Not-for-Profit Foundation, Amar Ram, welcomed GPL’s contribution, describing the waiver as a significant boost to the project and an example of how public and community partnerships can create lasting social impact.
GPL shared that the Yarrowkabra facility is expected to benefit hundreds of young people through a range of programmes focused on mental health, education, leadership development, life skills, mentorship and community engagement.
“As Guyana continues to grow, GPL remains committed to working alongside organisations that are making a positive difference in communities, ensuring that development extends beyond infrastructure to include meaningful investments in the nation’s people,” the agency stated.
