(Kaieteur News) – As Guyana stands on the precipice of its 60th year of independence, the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party has launched a program aimed at shifting the focus from mere revelry to a profound exploration of Guyanese soul and sovereignty.

Launched yesterday, the initiative, titled “Rooted in Identity – Rising in Destiny”, was introduced via joint statements from WIN’s Member of Parliament (MP) Odessa Primus and Clayon Halley of the Office of the Leader of the Opposition. The campaign is aimed at shifting how the nation marks its diamond jubilee, prioritizing historical reflection and community service over traditional surface-level festivities.

A Six-Phase Journey to Sovereignty

MP Primus outlined a six-week program designed to engage citizens across all ten administrative regions. According to Primus, independence is “the culmination of sacrifice, resilience, and the enduring spirit of a people determined to define their own destiny.”

The campaign will unfold through six distinct thematic pillars:

Remember (“We Didn’t Start Here”): A focus on historical education and storytelling to honor the journey to 1966.
Reflect (“Who Are We Becoming?”): National dialogues on the values and responsibilities of modern citizenship.
Reclaim (“This Is Who We Are”): A showcase of creative expression and cultural traditions.
Rise (“One People, One Nation”): Sector-wide collaboration aimed at fostering national unity.
Serve (“Build the Nation”): A call to action for community development and volunteerism.
Celebrate (“Independence Week”): Culminating in the grand multi-stage production, “The Dawn of a Nation: Guyana 60.”

“More Than Oil and Gold”

Echoing the call for depth, Clayon Halley, representing the Office of the Leader of the Opposition, challenged Guyanese to view the milestone as a “national awakening” rather than just a season of parties.

“Independence was never built on revelry,” Halley stated during the launch. “It was forged through struggle, sacrifice, and vision. There is a growing concern that the depth of our history is being overshadowed by surface-level celebration.”

Halley emphasized that while Guyana’s economic landscape is shifting rapidly, the nation’s core strength remains its human capital. “Our greatest resource is not oil, nor gold, nor land; it is our people. If we are to truly move forward, we must invest not only in infrastructure but also in identity.” By integrating “acts of service” and “national reflection” into the anniversary calendar, the organizers said they hope to bridge divides of race, class, and creed. “Sixty years will not just be a milestone we mark,” Halley concluded, “but a turning point we remember.”
