Children in Mahaicony crash discharged from hospital, recovering
(Kaieteur News) – The four children who were injured in Friday’s deadly crash along the Airy Hall Public Road, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara, have all been discharged from the Mahaicony Public Hospital and are recovering well.
Relatives confirmed to Kaieteur News on Sunday that the children, who sustained minor injuries, were discharged on Saturday. They are currently being cared for by family members at Tuchen, East Bank Essequibo.
The children are relatives of Seerochanie Khemraj of Tuchen New Housing Scheme, who lost her life in the crash. Also killed was the driver of the hire car, Nicklas Lillah of Lot 918 Tuchen Housing Scheme.
The car involved in the accident resulting in the death of taxi driver Nicklas Lillah and passenger, Seerochanie Khemraj, also leaving four children injured.
Among the injured are Khemraj’s 14-year-old daughter, along with her husband’s nieces and nephews: a 14-year-old boy, a 17-year-old girl, and a 12-year-old boy.
Relatives explained that Khemraj had been traveling to Mahaicony with the children on Friday to visit her stepdaughter and other relatives in Berbice when the tragedy occurred.
Khemraj’s daughter, now left without her mother, is being supported by cousins and other family members as they cope with the loss. “She is doing okay; she’s with her cousins who are helping her,” a relative said.
Family members described the incident as shocking and said it has opened wounds of grief among relatives and close friends. “It’s shocking news because nobody expected it,” the relative added.
Khemraj was remembered as a kind and loving person.
A post-mortem examination is expected to be conducted on Monday.
According to a report from the Guyana Police Force (GPF), preliminary investigations revealed that Lillah was driving hire car HD 5859 east along the northern side of Huntly Public Road, Mahaicony, behind a line of traffic. While attempting to overtake, the vehicle collided with the rear-view mirror of motor car PAN 2760, which was traveling in the same direction.
Police said the driver continued at a fast rate of speed and, upon reaching Airy Hall Public Road, lost control while negotiating a sharp left bend. The car struck an aluminium rail, continued north along the eastern side of the road, and then collided with a GPL utility pole.
The impact left the hire car extensively damaged. Lillah and Khemraj who was seated in the front passenger seat, sustained severe injuries and were found unconscious at the scene. They were taken to the Mahaicony Public Hospital, where they were pronounced dead on arrival.
The four children, who were also in the vehicle, were taken to the same hospital for treatment.
Investigations into the accident are ongoing.
