(Kaieteur News) – Twelve-year-old Marlon Jupiter should be worrying about school, friends, and what he wants to be when he grows up. Instead, the once bubbly child is a patient of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) facing something no child should ever have to face.
He has been diagnosed with T-Lymphoblastic Lymphoma, an aggressive and life-threatening blood cancer. His doctors have advised that his best chance of survival is an urgent bone marrow transplant. However, the heartbreaking reality is that this life-saving treatment is not yet available in Guyana. It will cost USD $35,000 or $GYD 7,325,000. Without this treatment abroad, he will not survive.
But there is hope. US-based medical Charity Saving Hands Emergency Aid (SHEA) has stepped in to assist in raising awareness about Marlon’s case and help raise funds needed for his travel overseas.
The charity has opened a GoFundMe in the child’s name and has shared his story on social media platforms, appealing to the public to help give Marlon the chance to grow up, chase his dreams, and live the life every child deserves. SHEA has been able to raise only USD $4000 of the USD $35,000 needed for the transplant.
The charity explained that the sums raised will cover the cost of international cancer care, including medical, travel, housing during treatment, and months of recovery.
“We are working urgently with doctors in Brazil to secure treatment and to coordinate his medical transfer, which would give him access to this life-saving treatment. But we cannot do it alone; we need your help,” SHEA said in its public appeal via its website.
The appeal continued “No child should die simply because life-saving treatment isn’t available where they were born. Your donation today will help give Marlon a fighting chance. And every dollar received will help move him one step closer to treatment. Right now, Marlon’s mother is praying that someone, somewhere, will hear her son’s story and help save his life. That someone could be you!”
