GPL moves to strengthen Bartica power system with major BESS upgrade
(Kaieteur News) – The Guyana Power and Light is seeking a contractor to upgrade the Bartica Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) from grid-following to grid-forming, a move aimed at improving power reliability and blackout recovery.
According to industry definitions from Energy Central, grid-following refers to the control strategy in which inverter-based energy sources such as solar, wind, or battery systems—synchronize their output with the existing electricity grid.
In simple terms, these systems rely on the grid’s voltage and frequency as a reference point and cannot function independently during an outage.
In the invitation for bids recently circulated, GPL assured that bidding will be conducted through the National Competitive Bidding (NCB) procedures, which are specified in the Procurement Act. “Interested eligible bidders may inspect the Bidding Documents and obtain further information from the Procurement Office, Guyana Power & Light Inc. 40 Main Street during normal working hours,” the bid invite stated.
