Kaieteur Sports – The Vurlon Mills Football Academy (VMFA) has announced plans to host the inaugural Exchange Cup 2026, a regional youth football tournament set for March 29 to April 1 at Camp Ayangana Ground.
The four-day tournament is expected to bring together several of the Caribbean’s promising youth academies and clubs, with invited teams from Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, Antigua and Barbuda and Saint Lucia.
According to Vurlon Mills, the competition will feature 62 matches over the course of the event, providing a platform for young footballers to display their ability while gaining valuable exposure to regional competition.
Mills said the tournament forms part of VMFA’s broader mission to strengthen youth football development in Guyana by giving players opportunities to compete against teams with varying playing styles and football cultures.
The former national player and youth coach explained that such exposure is critical for the growth of young athletes, particularly in a region where opportunities for consistent international competition at the youth level can sometimes be limited.
Mills believes that testing local talent against regional opponents will help players better understand the demands required to perform beyond Guyana’s domestic environment, while also sharpening their technical, tactical and mental approach to the game.
He emphasised that the Exchange Cup is designed to be more than simply a youth tournament. Instead, it is envisioned as a key component of a long-term development strategy aimed at creating meaningful pathways for aspiring footballers in Guyana.
By facilitating these regional exchanges, Mill said, through his academy, he hopes to strengthen ties between football communities across the Caribbean, encouraging collaboration between clubs and academies while opening doors for future tournaments, training programmes and development initiatives.
“Events such as the Exchange Cup are also expected to play an important role in building relationships among young players from different territories, fostering camaraderie while promoting the shared growth of football throughout the region,” Mills said in an invited comment.
According to Mills, the tournament will provide not only competitive matches, but also an environment that encourages learning, friendship and cultural exchange among participants.
