Kaieteur Sports – The Guyana Harpy Eagles bowled off the first of several practice games yesterday with the Matthew Nandu XI trailing opponents Tevin Imlach XI by 174-runs with tons of action earmarked for today’s second day at the Everest Cricket Ground.
Players will be revving up their mindset ahead of the upcoming CWI Regional 4-Day season, which bowls off April 12, leaving just a few weeks for the defending champions Guyana Harpy Eagles to fine-tune themselves ahead of what could be one of their toughest seasons yet given the increased talent pool from their competition.
Left-hander Ushardeva Balgobin, a strong competitor at this level over the recent years, dug in for a gritty day one, a solid 59 off 140 balls with 6 fours and 2 sixes after his skipper won the toss and chose to have a bat under some watchful weather.
The opener, alongside his partner, senior opener Raymond Perez (20) who hit four fours before he was dismissed early, their captain Tevin Imlach, who also got going with 36 (2×4) and Mavindra Dindyal (24); were the main top-order scoring components for their side.
Tommani Ceasar hit three fours in his 44-ball 21 to help consolidate for a few untimely losses, like that of key all-rounders in Johnathan Van Lange (2) and Richie Looknauth (0) who went cheaply, which in result played into the 1st innings score of 180-10 from 74.2 overs.
Nandu XI bowling was led by dynamic young all-rounder, Richard Ramdheol who tapped into his off-break spin to snare 3-29.
Leg-spinner Zeynul Ramsammy claimed 2 wickets for no runs while medium-pacer Aryan Persaud claimed 2-57 after putting in a good workout with some 20 overs under his belt during the first innings.
After a calm day of action, apart from Balgobin’s first day fifty and few starts from Imlach and others, Nandu XI carried the score to 6-0 after 3 overs.
Captain Matthew Nandu (2*) and Navindra Persaud (4*), were steady by the close of play with their team trailing by 174-runs going into the second day of action, with lots of time remaining in the match.
Meanwhile, play will resume today with action on the second day set to bowl off from 9:30h. (Clifton Ross)
