(Kaieteur News) – The Ministry of Public Utilities and Aviation through the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) intends to build a new air traffic control tower at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri.
According to a request for proposals (RFP) issued by the ministry the contract is for the “Engineering, Procurement and Construction” of the control tower.
The tender document states that bidding will be conducted through the National Competitive Bidding (NCB) procedures, specified in the Procurement Act 2003 and Regulations, and is open to all eligible, qualified proposers.
Notably, the ministry states that RFP document will be available from today (February 27, 2026) at GCAA’s office at Craig and Middleton Streets, Georgetown.
Bids are expected to open on April 16, 2026 at the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB) office.
This publication understands that the control tower is important in the aviation sector as it provides safe, reliable and efficient air navigations services within CJIA’s airspace.
It was reported that this year, the government allocated a sum of $3.2 billion for CJIA to continue its modernization to meet international standards and position it to become a regional transport hub with in-transit capabilities.
“Mr. Speaker, to support our investments in the aviation sector, and to prepare Guyanese to benefit fully from the vast opportunities that it will create, our Government will facilitate the establishment of an aviation school to equip Guyanese and persons from the Caribbean with the full range of aviation skills including certified training of pilots, engineers, inspectors, air traffic control officers and other aviation related expertise,” Senior Minister with the responsibility for Finance, Dr. Ashni Singh said in his budget presentation.
