(Kaieteur News) – President Irfaan Ali is slated to meet with US President Donald Trump on issues related to regional security and other challenges affecting the Caribbean in Miami on March 7.
President Ali made the disclosure to journalists following his meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, on the sidelines of the 50th regular meeting of the conference of CARICOM Heads of Government in St Kitts and Nevis on Wednesday.
The Guyanese Head of State revealed that the US has been working with Guyana on a number of issues including regional security.
“We have been working with the US on a number of issues, one of which is regional security. So, over the last couple of years, we have been engaging on strengthening our bilateral relationship in terms of security, and the US Administration is having a meeting on security matters as convened by President Trump in Miami and yes, I have been invited to the meeting,” Ali told reporters on the sidelines of the meeting.
He continued “It’s a meeting dealing with security matters. Its dealing with some of the challenges in the region … this is an engagement that has been ongoing.”
Questioned on how he feels about Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago being the only CARICOM countries invited to attend the meeting with Trump, Ali said he could not speak to who will be there but “Guyana will be attending.”
Commenting briefly on the ongoing tension between Guyana and Venezuela, President Ali echoed sentiments of other CARICOM heads of state.
He said “our duty as leaders is to ensure that we work hard in the interest of our country, in the interest of our citizens and in the interest of the region and we have inherent responsibility to support each other whenever we come under threat from forces like Venezuela.”
Meanwhile, Ali welcomed the support of Trinidad and Tobago and the words of Prime Minister Kamala who reinforced her support for Guyana in the face of Venezuela’s aggression. He asserted too that Guyana will not sit by if any of its state or territorial integrity is threatened.
‘We have a responsibility to support each that the responsibility of the charter.”
