(Kaieteur News) – Former Assistant Commissioner of Police Paul Slowe, on Friday, was found not guilty of three counts of sexual assault by Senior Magistrate Fabayo Azore.
The ruling was handed down at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court. The charges were brought against Slowe back in 2021.
Senior Magistrate Azore based her ruling mainly on the fact that the evidence of the prosecution and the defence is of equal weight. She noted that the law is clear that when this is the case, the benefit of the doubt must go to the accused.
The magistrate made it clear that though the court could not say with certainty that Slowe was guilty, that should not be construed that the complainant fabricated her evidence. Magistrate Azore noted that the prosecution failed to meet the high threshold required by law.
The three charges allege that Slowe sexually assaulted a female member of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) on three occasions back in 2019 at Police Headquarters, Eve Leary.
The first charge alleges that between March 26 and April 2, 2019, Slowe allegedly touched the victim in a sexual way by rubbing her left leg and foot without consent. The second charge stated that on March 29, 2019, at Police Headquarters, Eve Leary, Slowe allegedly touched the victim in a sexual way by rubbing her left leg and foot without consent. The third charge alleges that on April 2, 2019, at Police Headquarters, Eve Leary, Slowe allegedly touched the victim in a sexual way by rubbing her left leg and foot without consent.
Senior Police Legal Advisor and attorney-at-law Mandel Moore appeared on behalf of the Prosecution. GPF has since signaled its intention to appeal the ruling.
