(Kaieteur News) – A viral video surfaced on Tuesday of a young man being beaten by a Chinese national at a supermarket on the East Coast of Demerara because he attempted to steal items.
It is unclear where specifically the incident occurred but reports are that the young man was cornered by the Chinese national, presumably the store owner, who assaulted him. The young man was heard confessing to the crime while telling the Chinese who accosted him that he attempted to steal the items because he was hungry.
The video showed the Chinese man kneeing the young man several times while saying, “you like thief”.
The young man explained that he tried to steal the items out of necessity.
“You thief? You nah like work!” the Chinese man declared before slapping the young man. In response, the young man said. “Nobody nah give me nothing”, while he remained in the grip of the Chinese National.
The Chinese national then emptied a bag the young man had in his possession stating, “Me nah like thief man”. The man while holding on to the young man emptied the bag which contained a body lotion and pants.
“Me tek them thing to sell so I can get money to buy thing to eat because me hungry,” the young man explained.
“Me nah like thief man,” the Chinese national repeated while continuously kneeing the young man to the gut.
“You nah know Chinese man me nah like thief man,” the Chinese man declared as he continued to beat the young man.
It is unclear if the shop-lifting incident was reported to police.
Questions to the police on the matter are yet to be answered.
