(Kaieteur News) – A 24-year-old labourer was on Wednesday sentenced to three years’ imprisonment after he admitted to taking narcotics into the Lusignan Prison, East Coast Demerara.
Timothy Mc Garrell of Timehri Squatting Area, East Bank Demerara, appeared before Senior Magistrate Sunil Scarce at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court, where the charge was read to him.
Mc Garrell was charged with Introducing Narcotics into Prison, contrary to Section 7(1)(a)(i) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Control) Act, Chapter 10:10. The offence was committed on February 17, 2026, at the Lusignan Prison.
He pleaded guilty to the charge.
As a result, Magistrate Scarce sentenced him to three years in prison and imposed a fine of $30,000. In default of payment, additional time will be added to the custodial sentence.
