Dear Editor,
I write to congratulate Mr. Franklin Wilson on his return to the presidency of the Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation (GAPLF). As the father of Dominic Tyrrell — one of Guyana’s top powerlifters — I have witnessed firsthand the calibre of man Mr. Wilson is, and I welcome his return with great appreciation.
When my son, who was born in Guyana but spent most of his life in Trinidad, decided to represent Guyana in powerlifting, Mr. Wilson was my point of contact. What began as an administrative enquiry developed into a wonderful relationship. He took the time to explain the rules and regulations of powerlifting to me — a sport I knew little about at the time. He also assisted our family when my other son, Delroy Tyrrell, encountered difficulties representing Guyana in swimming. Mr. Wilson did not have to help, but he did. That is his character.
My son Dominic speaks highly of him. Mr. Wilson was instrumental in ensuring Dominic’s presence at the 2024 World Championships in Lithuania — his best competition to date, where he placed 6th and won a bronze medal in the deadlift. When the assigned coach fell ill just before the competition, Mr. Wilson organised a replacement. He ensured accommodation was arranged and paid for, oversaw registration, and maintained clear communication between Dominic and the executive. Even now, with Dominic based abroad, Mr. Wilson keeps up with his competitors and ensures everything is in order.
Today, Dominic is the number one-ranked 83kg lifter in Guyana and the number two-ranked 83kg lifter in South America. None of this would have been possible without people like Mr. Wilson working tirelessly behind the scenes.
Congratulations, Mr. President. Guyana’s athletes are in good hands.
Respectfully,
Rev. Dr. Fitzroy Tyrrell Proud Father of Dominic Tyrrell.
