Kaieteur Sports – Action in the 2026 GCB Men’s Under-16 Inter-county 50-Over tournament bowled off yesterday with an interesting double-header which saw both Berbice and Demerara sealing commanding wins to get their receptive campaigns off to a great start.
Batting first at LBI Ground, Demerara got to their first innings score of 168-10 in roughly 48 overs, after a string of scores which eventually helped push them to their psychological comfort zone.
Opener Lomar Seecharran (27), Nathan Bishop (41), Prosper Jacobus (22), Afraz Khan (20*) and Makai Dowlin (19) led the city boys batting charge.
The Cinderella County boys did a fantastic job in restricting their opponents to under 200 runs, with honours going to their trio of DeMarcus Thomas (3-22), Devraj Persaud (3-26) and Rondell Nurse who wrapped up the innings with returns of 2-16.
Tension rose during the chase as Essequibo lost their main scorers, in Thomas who returned to chip in with a grueling 74-ball 33, opener Ravid Fredricks (17) and Usain Fredricks (10).
After losing a chunk of their batting including the big wicket of Captain and opener Ethan Silas (8), it was Jonathan Barry who looked to keep his team on course for the win.
Barry, alongside last batsman Nurse were then tasked with not only keeping their heads on a swivel, but reducing the deficit as their options grew thin.
In the end, Seecharran was the man to bring proceedings to an abrupt end when he removed the wicket of a stubborn Barry which put the toppings on what turned out to be a tense back and forth battle.
Demerara all-rounder Khan, who was named MVP, snared 2-16 with help from Aaron Persaud (2-20), Somesh Boyer (2-16), Seecharran (1-1) alongside two others who returned a scalp each.
Over at Canje in Berbice, it was a virtual nightmare for the GCB XI who made a complete mess of their innings batting first, imploding for a paltry 29-10 after laboring for roughly 23 overs.
Berbice youth skipper Leon Reddy ran through an inexperienced lineup to finish with 4-7 from 6 overs, which was instrumental in ensuring none of the opposition batsmen reached double figures.
Support came from Ravindra Persaud (2-10) with a wicket apiece from 4 other bowlers including Jaden Ganpat (1-5), helping to complete a sterling performance with the ball for Berbice.
Eyeing what could be the easiest target this tournament unless the teams up the ante, Berbice failed to break a sweat as they strolled to 30-2 in 4.2 overs.
Unbeaten knocks from opener Luke Amsterdam (7*) and middle-order batsman Asgaralli Nabi (9*), coupled with 11 Extras was enough to take the Berbicians home with almost all their overs still intact.
Young pacer Jasani Craig (1-20) and Guatam Dhanraj (1-9) were the lone wicket-takers for the GCB XI.
Round 2 continues today with the GCB XI tackling a big challenge in Demerara at LBI, while Berbice and Essequibo collide at Lusignan with both games scheduled to bowl off from 9:30hs respectively. (Clifton Ross)
