Kaieteur Sports – The University of Guyana (UG) Turkeyen Campus and the Government Technical Institute (GTI) emerged as the latest winners in the inaugural Modec Tertiary Education Football Tournament, recording commanding victories on Sunday at the Queen’s College ground to remain unbeaten in the opening round.
GTI produced a clinical response to defeat Texila American University 5-2 in an entertaining encounter. Texila struck early through Adolf Adietbella, who netted in the sixth and 11th minutes to hand his side a 2-0 advantage.

GTI delivered a relentless come-from-behind victory against Texila University to remain as title contenders.
GTI, however, quickly regrouped. Damario Webb ignited the comeback in the 13th minute with a well-taken strike from outside the striking area to reduce the deficit. Kevin Davis then converted from the penalty spot in the 30th minute after Charles Efrahim was penalised for handball, levelling the contest at 2-2.
The momentum swung decisively in GTI’s favour two minutes later when David Augusta capped off a tidy build-up to give his team a 3-2 lead. Alton Fraser extended the advantage, finishing calmly from close range inside the six-yard box to make it 4-2. Though the second half was more measured and defensively organised, Keron Seymour sealed the result in the 61st minute to complete the 5-2 triumph.
Meanwhile, UG Turkeyen Campus delivered the most emphatic performance of the tournament so far, dismantling the Guyana Industrial Training Centre (GITC) 18-0 in the second leg of their home-and-away fixture.

Sherwin Evans was the standout performer, registering a double hat-trick to underline UG’s title ambitions. The onslaught began almost immediately, with Josiah King (2’), Jaleei Alcindor (6’), Romeo Bradford (8’) and Deandre Anderson (10’) all finding the net in a blistering opening spell.
Evans opened his account in the 39th minute, while Bradford added his second a minute later. From there, UG tightened their grip on the contest. Evans struck again in the 48th, 52nd, 59th, 65th and 69th minutes, as Ronaldo Sobers added further goals in the 83rd, 88th and 90th minutes. Kerron Spencer contributed a brace (62’, 89’), and Montell McAlmont added a lone strike in the 80th to complete the rout.
The tournament is sponsored by Modec, with support from the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, MACORP, Demerara Mutual Group and Banks Powerade. Action continues tomorrow as teams battle for spots in the next round.
