Kaieteur Sports – Group C table-leaders, West Indies face their toughest challenge yet when they square off against an old nemesis in the English, when T20 World Cup action continues today at Wankhede.
England survived a scary encounter with the Nepalese, who pushed the former champs to their brink despite losing by 4 wickets.
The opening combination of Phil Salt and wicket-keeper Jos Buttler should likely remain a fixture at the top, despite the former failing to get going in the last match.
Buttler will also want to capitalize on his positive start to the Cup being just 20-odd runs away from 4000 T20I runs, alongside top-scorers elegant young left-hander Jacob Bethell and Captain Harry Brook.
The duo both hit half-centuries in the previous battle, making their form today against a stacked Windies bowling team all the more important.
Windies will also need to be mindful of possible match-winners Tom Baton, Sam Curran and Will Jacks. Although Banton and Curran failed to get out of the blocks against Nepal, Jacks’ 38 not out with 4 sixes will linger in the back of the Caribbean team’s mind as they approach today’s assignment.
England, with an equally stacked bowling unit will want to see as much from their quicks especially strike bowlers Jofra Archer and Luke Wood, who had a wicket each but were a bit expensive.
Curran provided the third seam option and could have 4 crucial overs to bowl for his team, alongside spinners Liam Dawon, veteran leggy Adil Rashid, Jacks and/or useful part-timer Bethell.
Having started off with a convincing win, West Indies find themselves in a must-win situation against a formidable English team.
Shimron Hetmyer’s form most notably his recent fifty, has been a key part of the team’s identity, seemingly returning to a more aggressive approach to their game with the left-hander enjoying his Purple Patch.
Windies will also want Sherfane Rutheford to settle in and find his groove, having shown a preview in the last game, but needs support down the order from Romario Shepherd or possibly Mathew Forde.
Spin more than likely plays a huge role for both sides, especially the pair of Windies left-arm spinners Gudakesh Motie and Akeal Hosein, who will need to step their game efficiency up against a more experienced batting.
Record-making Shepherd, fresh off a 5-fer and a hat-trick will hold down the seam department along with fellow Berbician Shamar Joseph,
Openers Brandon King and Captain Shai Hope need to settle down and provide the foundation needed for the likes of Hetmyer, Rovman Powell and their other main scorers.
Holder, during Monday’s interview following the team’s training session at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai said the team was confident heading into today’s match.
“First and foremost to get two points was key. It was a very crucial game to start the tournament well. At certain stages of the game we were challenged and we came through in those tough situations and that’s a strong sign going forward”.
The former West Indies captain got to his 100-wicket milestone in the last game, further establishing himself as one of the top all-rounders in T20 cricket.
Speaking on his achievement, the Bajan said, “Personally to get 100 in this format is a blessing to be fair. Being the first to take a 100 in each format of the game, I take it as it comes.”
Regarding the way forward, Holder believed that the Windies will need to stick to the basics and remain consistent as they eye a place in the Super8’s.
“I think we ticked a lot of boxes in the first game, we have to keep challenging ourselves in every department.”
Holder further pointed out that “Role clarity and execution” are among the areas the team will be looking to increase their growth in throughout this run.
He said individuals knowing their roles and being able to execute them while bringing it together collectively during games; is a huge part of the team’s on-field plans.

Fast-bowler Jason Holder said consistency is an integral part of the team’s game plan throughout this World Cup. (CWI)
In all, the fast-bowler believed that consistency in the bowling, batting and especially in the fielding department; where they need to brush up on their tactics.
If West Indies win today, they could keep the number one spot but will have to beat England convincingly in order to maintain their position and momentum, with Scotland lurking in 2nd place.
West Indies, England and Scotland each have 2 points and will be tussling to get past the Group C stages with action heating up across Asia.
