(Kaieteur News) – Last July, Faith Cadogan travelled to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) to determine the cause of a bloodshot right eye of her nine-year-old son. Though unsure of what brought on the effect, Cadogan never anticipated the update that her son, Kaden Cadogan, was developing Rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare form of cancer also called soft tissue sarcoma.
This is a cancer that is prevalent mostly in children, but also affects adults. It develops in one’s skeletal muscles.
With his diagnosis, doctors informed the child’s mother that an urgent surgery must be performed, which would require a substantial amount of money. The single mother of four, who is currently unemployed, is seeking financial assistance from the public.
Having noticed the bloodshot in his eye, Faith and her youngest child made several visits to the medical facility, where she was told the situation was serious. Doctors told her that only a laser procedure was needed to remove what appeared to be a fleshy buildup in his right eye.
This was not successful, and the child would eventually lose his right eye.
Speaking to this publication on Thursday, Cadogan, shared that her child would occasionally complain of discomfort.
“He does be complaining of pain…. he will say ‘mommy, I feel so different, my head soft on the one side’ where his (affected) eye is,” the mother told Kaieteur News.
The boy and his mother reside at Lot 4674 Rasville Roxanne Burnham Garden in Georgetown. The fund is being sought for surgery to prevent a total loss of vision and the spread of cancer to other parts of his body.
“They just said get up some money,” she related to this publication when asked if she was given a figure by the doctors.
A pupil of St. Pius Primary School, the staff is aware of his situation. He was forced to skip critical class examinations and has missed out on assignments. Cadogan told this publication that Kaden is currently not attending school, but she remains in communication with his teachers.
Rhabdomyosarcoma presents multiple symptoms, including lump/swelling, in some cases a painful lump in various muscle areas; vision complications, headaches, blood in urine, difficulty urinating, abdominal discomforts, vomiting and constipation.
Cadogan related that her son became familiar with many of those symptoms over the last couple of months.
In a bid to prevent the spread of the debilitating disease, and to save not only his left eye, but his life, Faith is seeking tangible help.
“I am asking for a little help and a little donation. The little things and whatever you can do matters, because I am in a bad situation with my son’s health and condition….and you can just keep him and keep us in prayers,” she appealed.
