Govt. signs US$11.2M contract with Dutch company to dredge Demerara River
(Kaieteur News) – The Maritime Administration Department (MARAD) on Tuesday signed a US$11.2 million contract with Boskalis CPG Inc., a company from the Netherlands for the dredging of the Demerara River, from Houston to Golden Grove on the East Bank of Demerara.
According to a release from the Ministry of Public Utilities and Aviation, Minister Deodat Indar along with senior representatives from MARAD and Boskalis CPG Inc. witnessed the contract signing.

At the signing ceremony, Minister Indar stated that the project marks a significant milestone following consultations with representatives from the shipping industry, who underscored the need for additional dredging of the Demerara River.
“The project, which will be executed over the course of two months, will span a length of 9km along the navigational channel at a width of 100 metres, and a depth of five metres,” the ministry reported.
Once completed, shipping vessels will have improved access to the Demerara channel, which will facilitate the sustainable movement of goods and services, along with increased port efficiency, among other benefits for the maritime sector, the ministry informed.
