Kaieteur Sports – Following a concise yet informative press briefing held yesterday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, President of the Caribbean Boxing Organisation (CBO) and Chief Executive Officer of Bris-O Promotion, Seon Bristol, officially unveiled the full fight card for the highly anticipated inaugural Caribbean Pro/Am Boxing Championship set for Saturday, January 24.
The landmark event is expected to showcase the depth and diversity of Caribbean boxing, featuring pugilists from the Bahamas, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, Barbados and host Guyana. Following yesterday’s meeting, the card will present 13 bouts; seven international professional contests complemented by six high-energy amateur matchups, promising fans a full night of entertaining boxing action.
Local standouts Desmond Amsterdam, Joel Williamson, Shakquain James and Abiola Jackman are among the names tipped to headline the event, while several amateur fighters will be eager to etch their names into the region’s boxing history during what Bris-O Promotion has branded as “A Night of Excitement.”

The stage is set for the Inaugural Caribbean Pro/Am Boxing Showdown. A few sponsor representatives shared photo with the Bris-O Promotion team following yesterday’s press briefing at CASH.
Affordability and safety were key themes during the briefing. Bristol emphasized that Bris-O Promotion is committed to raising the bar for boxing across the Caribbean, with athlete and spectator safety at the forefront of its operations.
“We are about to set the standards for Caribbean boxing, and to achieve this, the safety and security of athletes and patrons remain our biggest priority,” Bristol stated.
He further explained that the championship is not about imitation but elevation. “We are here not to recreate anything but to enhance the level of boxing here in Guyana and the wider Caribbean,” he added.
Bristol also revealed ambitious regional plans for the newly formed CBO, noting that this event will be the first of three cards expected to be hosted in Guyana. Collectively, the Caribbean is projected to stage 10 boxing events annually, with Guyana positioned as a major hub, targeting at least three events per year.
Highlighting the suitability of the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, Bristol pointed to the comfort and readiness of the venue. “This venue is comfortable. We expect good/clean fun, the venue is safe and cool, which limits complaints from our international contingents. With this, we are ready to host the event this Saturday,” he said.
The professional (Pro) card will open with a much-anticipated local rivalry, as Guyana’s Desmond Amsterdam faces Edmond DeClou in a six-round showdown. Barbados’ Charles Cox will then challenge Guyanese Quincy Gomes, also over six rounds. The international flavour continues with Bahamian Rasheed Williams squaring off against Jamaican south-paw boxer Nico Yoe in bout #3.
Terrance Adams of Guyana will test his skills against Suriname’s Samuel Green in a four-round bout, followed by hard-hitting Joel Williamson taking on Jamaican rival Damar Haslam in another four-round clash. Suriname’s Mitchell Wielson will meet Barbados’ Tyreece Tait in what is expected to be an explosive encounter, while veteran Jamal Eastman closes the professional segment against Delon Charles in a four-round test of experience and endurance.
Meanwhile, speaking on behalf of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA), Technical Director Elton Chase described the amateur segment as the perfect prelude to the professional bouts.
“This segment is expected to be packed with excitement and pure talent,” Chase remarked.
Leading the amateur action, Guyana’s 90-plus kg female champion Abiola Jackman will face Angel George of Trinidad and Tobago in the most looked-forward-to rematch, after defeating the Trinidadian in their previous encounter. Jackman will be looking to reaffirm dominance in front of the home crowd.
Shakquain James is set to battle Ossis Prince in the 71 kg division, while Ken Harvey takes on Suriname’s Zahir Pimpico in a bout aimed at elevating the young Guyanese pugilist’s profile. Additional overseas amateur matchups include Jofes Jackman versus Chivoro Blackson of Suriname at 76 kg, and Travis Iverary against Mordino Massie of Suriname in the 72.5 kg category. Rounding out the amateur slate, Junior Madray and Roopesh Balgobin will collide to settle bragging rights as the nation’s top 40 kg boxer.
The customary weigh-in exercise is scheduled for Friday, January 23, at 16:00 hours, setting the stage for what promises to be a historic night for boxing in Guyana and the wider Caribbean.
