Kaieteur Sports – After holding their composure to secure their first win of the season, defending champions Guyana will look to go 2-0 in the tournament, when they face an equally upbeat Leeward Islands unit in tonight’s clash under lights at the Arnos Vale Ground, from 19:00h.
Leewards did a fantastic job to sneak past Jamaica after a string of their bowlers, including Jahzara Claxton, all-rounder Shawnisha Hector, Rozel Liburd, Qiana Joseph and others pulled out some top performances with the leather to help defend a low score in round 1 versus Jamaica.
Guyana on the other hand, showed their all-round class after some of their international stars like Shabika Gajnabi, Ashmini Munisar and Sheneta Grimmond and breakout regional star spinner Plaffianna Millington; all exhibiting confidence as they overcame a veteran Windwards team.
Tonight’s battle should further test both teams, with conditions changing to much more attentive, alert setting; as the women will need to quickly adjust to the lighting, dew among other factors which come into play during night games.
Should players like skipper Shemaine Campbelle, opener Mandy Mangru, who got a decent start with 16, Realeanna Grimmond alongside the Williams sisters in Latoya and Laurene get going with the bat; Guyana could pose a bigger threat to the Leewards bowling unit.
Leewards opener Hector scored the first half-century of the team before grabbing wickets, but will need help from front-line batters like Joseph, Claxton, skipper Amanda Edwards who had 20 in the last match and wicket-keeper Reneice Boyce.
Spinners Millington and Munisar alongside seamer Grimmond should continue to hold down the bowling attack, as key bowlers like spinner Kaysia Schultz or Analeisa D’aguiar play themselves into form with the competition getting deeper by the round.
Tonight’s encounter is a major one for the champs Guyana, who will be needing every bit of points, momentum and form, from their match-winners as they look to continue their winning ways this season.
Trinidad and Tobago will face Windwards from 14:30h, with Jamaica locking up against the Barbadians in the first match of the second round which gets underway from 9:30h.
