Kaieteur Sports – With darts enjoying a surge in popularity across the Caribbean and Latin America, the Guyana Darts Association (GDA) is taking a decisive step toward expanding the sport locally with the launch of its 2026 Youth Darts Training Programme. The initiative bowls off on Saturday, January 17 and 31, at the Malteenoes Sports Club Pavilion, Thomas Lands.
Originally developed in the early 1900s as a casual pastime among English soldiers, darts has evolved into one of the world’s leading precision and skill-based sports. Once confined to pubs and bars, the game now boasts professional leagues, regional championships, and major international tournaments that reflect its remarkable global growth. Today, darts offers athletes opportunities for worldwide recognition, competition, and travel.
While participation in Guyana remains modest, the sport enjoys massive followings in Europe and Central–Latin America, supported by extensive media coverage and lucrative prize events. Recognising this disparity, the GDA is now actively seeking to attract new prospects and strengthen the local darts fraternity.
Youth development sits at the heart of the Association’s vision. Locally, the sport has long been dominated by a small group of seasoned players, despite Guyana having representation at the Darts World Cup. Determined to change that narrative, the GDA is rolling out a series of youth-focused training sessions across the country, starting with this two-day initiative.
Held under the inspiring theme “Let’s Aim for Greatness,” the programme invites interested youths to learn the fundamentals of darts, sharpen their accuracy, boost mathematical skills, and build lasting friendships within the sporting community.
Each training day begins at 10:00 hrs and runs for two hours, offering participants hands-on interaction with coaches, detailed explanations of the rules, and exposure to modern techniques used in competitive play.
