Two more matches concluded on Sunday at the Dillon Heyliger-sponsored Cricket Academy at Suddie ground, Essequibo Coast, Region 2 (Pomeroon-Supenaam) under the tutelage of veteran Coach Forbes Daniels.
On Saturday, Royden Morris (Reds) emerged victorious over Daniel Dass (Blues) by seven wickets while the next day, rain forced the abandonment when that fixture was at the half-way stage.
The young cricketers, mainly of Under-13, 15 and 19 ages, had an opportunity to showcase their talent with four games from two weekends as well.
Blues took first strike at the invitation of Reds and only managed 133-8 from the reduced 30-overs, while Reds surpassed the target in the 27th over.
The reduction of the overs was due to rain.
Justin Dowlin led the chase successfully with an unbeaten 59, an innings characterized with six fours and a six, while Shazim Basheer contributed a handy 46.
Earlier, Essequibo Under-13 skipper DeMarcus Thomas top-scored with 32 and a patient 26 from Zaheer Ramkissoon, a current Essequibo Inter-County Under-15 Captain.
Dennis Crossman claimed two wickets for 15 runs from five off-break overs on a pitch with preparations moisture.
The next day, Reds piled up a competitive 147-9 from the reduced 22-overs and Blues were comfortably placed at 87-3 in the 13th over when rain intervened and ultimately halted proceedings.
Shazim Basheer and Shahab Teekram scored 24 and 21 respectively after their team won the toss and opted to take first knock.
Jousha Peters grabbed 2-15 (04) to be the most outstanding bowler for the Blues combination.
When Blues batted, former Guyana Under-15 player Zandon Rose hit a stroke-filled, unbeaten 44.
Meanwhile, Daniels expressed satisfaction with the four matches despite adverse weather affected the last two games.
According to the former Essequibo Senior Inter-County player and Coach, the youths played competitive cricket coupled with their eagerness and passion.
Daniels acknowledged the support of Heyliger, a Canada-based Guyanese for his support, sponsoring the four encounters for the young, aspiring cricketers.
The 36-year-old Heyliger has so far represented Canada at the International level already attiring in the country’s colours for 23 one-days and 56 T20s.
Additionally, the versatile all-rounder Heyliger played for Essequibo at various levels and Guyana youth team before his migration to North America.
Reflected on what had transpired during these four games, Daniels was pleased with the youngsters who performed well in both departments of the game.
“I [am] generally satisfied with the players’ over all performances; they competed well and played hard cricket, and I must express my sincere thanks to Heyliger to come on Board bringing great smiles to these young players,” the 64-year-old Daniels mentioned.
The same set of players are being coached by Daniels on a regular basis, four times per-a-week.
Daniels stated that the guys will continue to attend his Cricket Academy and learn the fundamentals at the same facility.
Over the years, Daniels has been hosting coaching clinics with players coming from Pomeroon and Wakenaam along with many from the Region.
Importantly, the players are showing improvements in every facet of their game. Daniels said the attendance might not be that great but this bunch of young cricketers who are dreaming to play at the highest level is certainly buoyant and willing to enhance the quality of their game.
He commented that he will work with them very hard and assiduously to see them play for Essequibo, Guyana and more prestigiously West Indies.
They have been analyzed while playing at club cricket too.
He is calling on the business sector to support or emulate Heyliger.
On Sunday, Junior Minister of Sports Steven Jacobs witnessed the final practice-match session during a visit at the ground and was impressed with the way things were planned and executed by Daniels.
