(Kaieteur News) – The Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) has ordered counseling and inclusivity training for Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara resident, Jennifer Ally, who was recently summoned for making racially insensitive posts on social media.
In a statement on Thursday, the ERC said Ally met with its officials on October 23, 2025, where she expressed her willingness to cooperate in addressing the serious concerns arising from her Facebook posts.
The Commission said it also reviewed Ally’s previous social media activity and has since proposed several social interventions, including psychosocial counselling and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) training. These measures, ERC explained, are aimed at fostering greater understanding, respect, and responsible communication in the public domain as its investigation continues.
ERC reminded that its constitutional mandate focuses on promoting harmony and good relations through mediation, conciliation, and arbitration not prosecution. “The Commission wishes to reiterate that it does not possess prosecutorial authority, nor is it responsible for arrests or prosecutions,” the statement clarified.
It added that in cases requiring legal enforcement, matters may be referred to the Guyana Police Force under Article 212D (j) of the Constitution, but only after due review and in accordance with the law. “We will continue to closely monitor the matter to ensure that Ms. Ally demonstrates a sustained commitment to respectful and responsible public engagement,” the commission stated.
ERC reiterated its commitment to promoting harmony among Guyana’s diverse ethnic groups and reminded citizens that public discourse must be conducted responsibly and with respect for the country’s diversity.
A few months ago, Ally appeared before the commission for a series of hateful and insensitive comments directed at 11-year-old Adriana Younge, who died in April, and her grieving family. A video later circulated showing Ally apologising for her remarks.
However, just months later, Ally has again sparked outrage over a series of posts speaking ill of Afro-Guyanese. On Tuesday, October 21, a fire destroyed a house at Block 9 ‘C’ Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara, where Ally lived with her family. The Guyana Fire Service confirmed that the structure and all its contents were completely destroyed, though no injuries were reported.
Following this, Ally made a Facebook post about the fire, and then shared a series of subsequent posts referring to Afro-Guyanese as having “zero brain cells,” and claiming “y’all (word redacted) burn my house down…” among other posts that are too insensitive to repeat. This led to several social media users expressing dissatisfaction with the ERC, urging the commission to intervene.
