Dear Editor,
Since assuming office, Minister Oneidge Walrond has maintained a constant public presence: launches, parades, and pronouncements about transforming the Guyana Police Force. But in the wake of the tragic explosion at the Mobil Gas Station, the Minister’s voice has vanished. The silence is deafening. The country is reeling from its third bombing in six months, yet the minister who never missed a camera especially in the last few days is now missing in action.
Leadership demands steadiness under fire, not withdrawal when the headlines darken. This is the defining test of Minister Walrond’s tenure. The Ministry she leads has presided over repeated security failures and an overstretched, under-trusted police force. The GPF must be told plainly: it is suffering from a trust deficit. Citizens do not believe what they hear from the police; they believe what they see, and too often, what they see are cover-ups, contradictions, and evasions. Every day without honest, factual briefings deepens that crisis of confidence. Transparency is not a favour to the public; it is the foundation of policing in a democracy.
Let this moment be a turning point. The Minister must speak, the police must come clean, and the country must see that our security institutions are bigger than any personality or party. To those who would test us, foreign or domestic, know this: even in our darkest hour, Guyana’s resolve will not be shaken, and our unity will not be broken.
Regards,
Sherod Duncan
