(Kaieteur News) – Leader of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR), Aubrey Norton, has confirmed that businessman Dr. Terrence Campbell, who was selected to lead the A Partnership for National Unity’s (APNU) 12-member team in the National Assembly, is now a member of the PNCR.
Norton made the disclosure during a press conference on Friday, clarifying that 11 of the 12 APNU parliamentarians are PNCR members, with the exception of Dr. David Hinds, who is a member of the Working People’s Alliance (WPA).
However, Norton declined to say when Dr. Campbell officially joined the PNCR. “Why do I have to say to you when did he join, you can engage Dr. Campbell and he will tell you but I don’t think it is my task to go out there to tell you when he joined…that don’t make sense to me,” he stated.
The 13th Parliament of Guyana is expected to convene on Monday November 3. APNU’s performance at the 2025 General and Regional Elections resulted in the party securing only 12 seats in the National Assembly, while newcomer We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) secured 16, making it the opposition party with the most seats in the House. Forward Movement Guyana (FMG) secured one seat, while the ruling People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) got 36.
Responding to criticism that Dr. Campbell, who is relatively new to the party was chosen to lead the team ahead of long-standing members, Norton laughed and said, “When you are making political decisions, you have to look at a number of variables and the persons who are in the parliamentary group are comfortable with the leadership of Mr. Campbell and we believe at this stage that as a businessman, he is one of the best persons to choose at this point in time he has shown commitment to the cause over the period that he has been there…”
He further noted that while some believe Dr. Campbell only recently joined the party, that is not the case. Norton explained that Dr. Campbell has been in discussions with the PNCR for over two years.
Campbell will lead returning MPs Juretha Fernandes, Coretta McDonald, A.A., Ganesh Mahipaul, Nima Flue-Bess, Sherod Duncan, and Vinceroy Jordan. The other MPs are Dr. David Hinds, Riaz Zakeer Rupnarain, Linden Mayor and former Regional Chairman Sharma Raheem Solomon, attorney and peace ambassador Dr. Dexter Todd, and gospel artiste and entrepreneur Saiku Andrews.
According to Norton, APNU’s 12-member team is a balanced combination of six newcomers and six experienced MPs. “I’m well aware that you cannot satisfy people,” he added. He also addressed questions about the exclusion of former Opposition Chief Whip Chris Jones and Sherwayne Holder, explaining that the decisions made were as rational as possible.
Notably, Dr. Campbell is not entirely new to the political scene. In an interview with this publication a few months ago, he clarified that he had never been affiliated with any political party and had not shifted allegiance from one to another. Although previously suspected of being linked to the Alliance For Change (AFC) during coalition negotiations with APNU, Campbell appeared on the APNU’s list.
Campbell stressed that while he has maintained friendships across political lines, including with President Irfaan Ali and members of the AFC, he was never officially affiliated with any political party.
“I want to clear the air. Over the years, I’ve heard people say I’ve been PPP, I’ve been AFC maybe because I’ve been friends with people in those groups… I was told that the Vice President, Bharrat Jagdeo said that I jump ship. I can’t jump from where I never was, I’ve never been a member of any political party,” he had explained.
